Stuck at home, bored, and craving something munchy without leaving the comforts of your home? Try these recipes for easy snacks you can make at home, even as a guy, it might be messy but why not have a little fun while at it? These easy snacks and treats can be made in minutes, something salty and savoury yet filling. 

5 Easy Snacks To Make At Home

1. Puff-Puff

This is our very own African soft, fluffy and yummy-filled goodness. And what’s best is that it is a mouth-full small chop. Want to throw in some extra time? Then this one’s for you!

Ingredients For Making Puff-puff

Flour, sugar, yeast, milk, nutmeg, oil to fry

Procedure For Making Puff

In a small bowl, add yeast and water. Cover and leave to rise for 5-10 minutes. 

In a bigger bowl, add in the flour, sugar, milk, and nutmeg. I suggest fresh nutmeg seed for extra freshness or the regular packaged nutmeg.

After the time elapses, pour in the yeast-water mixture to the flour mixture and give a good whip till you get a homogenous consistency. 

Tip: If the yeast mixture shows no bubbles at the top, I suggest you discard and make another one cause the yeast is not active and as such, your dough won’t rise since yeast is a rising agent.

In a pan, heat oil till hot. Use your hand to scoop out the desired size or use a spoon to avoid being messy. Trust me, washing off dough is annoying. Fry the puff-puff till golden brown below, about 2-3 minutes. Flip to the other side and fry till golden brown.

Remove from oil and transfer to paper towels to drain out remnant oil.

Allow cooling. Enjoy with yaji (pepper) or glaze in condensed milk for extra sweetness. You may also top with coconuts as I did.

2. Pop-Corn

Craving something sweet yet savoury? I recommend you buy some pop kernel seeds when next you go to the market to make this treat an easy one. I love butter so I used it for an extra twist but if you’re not a fan of butter, then the oil is okay for you.

This sweet treat can be topped with caramel. Want a twist? Add groundnut!

Ingredients For Making Popcorn

Kernel seeds, and Oil or butter (If using butter, you’re giving it an extra twist to have a salty taste but sweet)

Procedure For Making Popcorn

In a large pot over the stovetop or of your choice, add in little butter or oil over high heat. 

Try adding 2-3 kernel seeds and cover. This is to check if the oil is ready to start popping, if so, you begin to hear the pop sound. That’s when you know you’re ready to savour this! Remove the 2-3 seeds from the pot.

Proceed to pour in the desired quantity of kernel seeds. Cover the pot and let sit for a minute or two till you hear a popping sound again, this time, a lot of cause of the extra seeds. It will be some crazy popping I tell you! It may most likely pop to the lid of your pot but do not fret, we’re popping here.

Give the pot a good shake for even heating and to stop seeds from burning at the bottom.

Once the popping slows down, remove the pan from heat and transfer to a serving bowl or you eat directly.

Savour the taste and moment!

3. Potato Slices

Ditch the good old frying potato wedges and get innovative as you make these slices. They are easy to make and as well easy to eat in a munch.

Ingredients For Making Popcorn

Potatoes, Pepper (cayenne, black, or both), Salt and Oil

Procedure For Making Popcorn

Peel and slice potatoes in circular shapes. Wash and allow water content to drain or dry.

In a zip lock bag or by hand, place potato slices, pepper, and salt and give a good shake till homogenous and spices are shared evenly around the potatoes.

On a baking pan, place a baking sheet and drizzle with oil.

Arrange the slices in an even manner and bake till golden brown.

I suggest you just fry it to have that crispy and crunchy bite.

4. Banana Bread Toast

Tired of regular bread and tea breakfast? Why not banana bread, one of the snacks you can try at home?

Ingredients For Making Banana Bread

Banana, oil to fry, rolling pin, sliced bread, sugar, milk and eggs.

Procedure For Making Banana Bread

Slice the banana. 

Use oil or butter to fry the banana till golden brown. While frying, stir in some sugar of desired quantity.

Cut out the edges of your bread, we’ll be using just the insides. I suggest sliced bread for easy work but if you can get a square shape from the one you have, then, that’s fine too.

Roll the insides of the bread using the rolling pin till you get a flat layout.

In a bowl, break an egg, add sugar and milk. Whisk till homogenous.

On your bread, add some banana to the middle and at the edge of the bread, smear some of the egg mixtures.

Roll up your bread by bringing the left edge to the middle and the right edge on top of the left.

Dip the bread into the egg mixture for an even cover. Make sure the edges don’t open. If they do, cover using a fork.

In a pan, heat oil till hot. Fry till golden brown and a bit crispy.


5. Bread Sandwich

If you feel the banana bread toast is too much of work? Then I have this simple for you. If you’re out of mayo, I got you covered! You can make yours.

Ingredients For Making Bread Sandwich

Mayonnaise, Boiled egg, Bread, Lettuce (optional), Tomato (optional) I don’t like tomatoes in mine but if you do, go ahead, go red when mounting the layers and Sardine.

Ingredients For Making The Mayo

Egg and egg yolk, lemon juice, drops of oil, salt and Mustard (optional)

Procedures For Making Mayo For Bread Sandwich

In a blender, add in an egg and an extra egg yolk to make it thick and creamy. Add in mustard.

Add a squeeze of lemon juice and lemon zest for extra freshness.

Blend for 30-45 seconds till thick.

Add in oil drops slowly to avoid making it watery and nasty.

When you get your desired consistency, add in a pinch of salt and taste.

Procedure For Making The Layers Of Sandwich

In a bowl, mash the boiled egg together with sardine.

Add the mayo till incorporated into the egg and sardine mixture.

Lay this mixed delicacy on bread, add tomatoes and lettuce for extra richness.

Cover with another layer of bread.

Cut to the desired size.
