Prominent Islamic Cleric Dr. Sheikh Ahmad Mahmud Gumi has succeeded in getting over 500 kidnappers to surrender after he visited them and preached to them.
Sheikh Gumi held this meeting with the kidnappers at Sabon Garin Yadi which is under the Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The bandits were moved by his message in which he promised to personally meet with President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that basic amenities are provided to them. The cleric has once expressed such views on a post on his Facebook page.
The bandits were also promised schools would be built for them and businesses established to curb the problems of poverty and illiteracy which are the things that plague their society. The bandits in turn promised to lay down their weapons and cease all kidnapping activities in the area while also laying down some conditions to be met by the government for the peace to last. They asked that the government should halt all activities of harassment by law enforcement agencies on them.
Kidnapping around the Kaduna State axis has been rampant. Hardly a week goes by without news of a new kidnapping. The situation was so dire that innocent victims are abducted from their residence. It can be recalled just a few days ago, a University professor was abducted while his son was shot dead in Wusasa, Zaria.
According to the bandits, most of them had lost their family members as law enforcement agencies continue to attack their youth. They asked that this stops before they keep their own end of the bargain, and also to reveal the identity of the people asking them to carry out these atrocious acts. They relayed that they can’t possibly know all their victims – who were rich or important, internal collaborators provided them with such information.
The meeting was graced by the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Umar Muri, who represented the Inspector General of Police GP on the peace mission. He pleaded with the bandits to maintain the peace while he passes on their requests to IGP Adamu and assured them that their demands will be met. He said the police will hold their own end of the bargain and the government will listen to their cries.
At the end of the meeting, to seal their talks on the kidnappers surrendering, the Islamic cleric gave out clothes, brocades, and the sum of five hundred thousand Naira on behalf of Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi Initiative for the Propagation of Sunnah, the organization spearheading the Da’awah. The chairman of the Media Department of the Da’awah Movement, who is also the Publisher of Newspaper Desert Herald, Malam Tukur Mamu also assured them that everything that can be done will be done to address their major concerns.
The Emir of Zazzau Amb. Nuhu Bamalli, represented by Alhaji Nuhu Lawal Umar the Hakimin Fatika and also the Kaigaman Zazza has also commended the initiative of the cleric. He called on the state and federal government to support the move and pledged his total support and that of his emirate to Sheikh Gumi.
Sheikh Ahmad Gumi followed his father’s footsteps, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi the former Grand Khadi of Northern Nigeria and a renowned scholar. Sheikh Gumi remains fearless and committed to his peace mission, despite being threatened by Boko Haram in early January this year to desist from doing so.
