Today, the Collation of Northern Groups (CNG) kicked off its #SecureNorth protests in the Northern part of the country. The protest is the latest to rock the country since the #EndSARS protests started days ago. Since then, groups such as #ProSARS, #EndSWAT, and others have sprung up.

The #SecureNorth protests were scheduled to start on Thursday, 15th October in all the 19 Northern States. This was in response to the wave of killings, banditry, kidnappings, and insurgency sweeping the region.

It can be recalled that just a few days ago, 12 people were killed and numerous others were injured by Gunmen in Giwa Local Government of Kaduna State. Also, armed men attacked SHY Plaza at Gadon Kaya in Kano and carted away valuables.

The protests were meant to draw the attention of the Government to the incessant killings in the region. So how did the protests fare?

Trouble started early when the protesters were attacked by hoodlums after 10, in Kabuga and people had to run for cover. According to eyewitnesses, the police around the area were laughing at the protesters as they scamper for their lives. The protesters also sustained injuries while they are fleeing as thugs attacked them opposite BUK old campus. Some of the protesters had to promptly leave the scene, as they were beaten with belts and stabbed.

Situation Under Control in Kaduna

The case is however different in Kaduna as the protests were peaceful throughout. The protesters marched all the way to the Kaduna State House of Assembly Complex. However, the speaker was unavailable. Instead, the Clerk of the House received the protesters’ demands in writing.

“SARS is not made up of bad elements alone as it also includes personnel who are doing their work diligently,” The Governor was quoted to have said.

The Governor of Kwara State however marched with the protesters to the Police Headquarters demanding justice for the killed citizens.
