Growing Lettuce in Northern Nigeria

Lettuce can be grown in all seasons, but preferably in dry season.

Soil Type

Grow lettuce in a rich and loose soil.

Seeds are planted in the nursery at 2 seeds per hole in seed trays or in lines. The seeds should be planted at a depth of 0.5cm -1cm. Seeds are expected to germinate in 1 week. After 2 weeks, thin plants to 1 per hole or 1 in every 5 cm line spacing.

Transplant the nursery during the third week or when the plants have 4-5 leaves. After that, transplant the lettuce with a spacing of 20cm/20cm.

Weed control is very important when growing lettuce because of the fragility. Frequent and abundant watering is also necessary.

Depending on the variety, lettuce can be ready for harvest between 45-70 days after planting. Keep harvested lettuce dry and in a cool and dry place to avoid spoilage.
