The app, named Helpio was launched on 5th August 2020 on Google Play store and has already had over a thousand downloads and a 4.9 rating. The app was updated on 9th March to upgrade the indigenous language, Hausa used.
The app provides a safe space for victims of sexual abuse to report, learn preventive measures, chat with counselors and find nearby help centers.
“Looking at all the sexual abuse happening around me without getting justice for the victims makes me sad. Seeing people falling victim to it without getting access to the right organizations can help particularly. So I used my skills to develop this app to connect the victims with the appropriate organizations,” Sa’adatu said.
The Helpio App was created in partnership with NGO’s multidisciplinary response team of counselors, lawyers, medics, and advocates providing counseling, medical evaluations, emergency shelter to victims to create better ways to curb sexual abuse in the community.
Northern Nigeria and indeed Nigeria at large will benefit from this kind of invention, seeing the number of rape and sexual assault on the rise. The use of the local language Hausa will also go a long way to ensure the victims get justice.
