Out of two major contenders for the office of the new Vice-Chancellor at Federal University Gashua, Yobe State, Professor Maimuna Waziri emerged successful. The Governing Council of the university approved her appointment as the new Vice-Chancellor on January 16, 2021. She is the first female appointed VC of the university since its establishment by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013. Incumbent VC Prof Haruna took over from pioneer VC Prof Shehu Abdul Rahman in 2016. Professor Maimuna also becomes the only female Vice-Chancellor in Northern Nigeria, now that Professor Fatima Mukhtar of the Federal University of Dutse has finished her tenure.

The selection process for the appointment involved 48 applications from Professors which only 25 were shortlisted and only 3 candidates made it to the final stage. With her appointment, Professor Maimuna Waziri emerged as the only female Vice-chancellor in Northern Nigeria.

So What Is The Biography of The Only female Vice-Chancellor in Northern Nigeria?


Professor Maimuna Waziri was born in 1966 at Gashua town, Bade local government area, Yobe State. She had her first degree and graduated in 1986 at Bayero University Kano where she studied Bsc Chemistry and was awarded The Michael Collins Memorial Prize for the best 1st year Physical Chemistry student as well as the best graduating Chemistry student.

Work Experience

Following her degree, was her taking a job as a graduate assistant in 1987. She then went on to obtain her Master’s degree at the University of Ibadan in Physical Chemistry in 1990 and the Ph.D. degree in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Maiduguri in 2006.

Professor Maimuna continued lecturing at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Maiduguri until she rose to the position of senior lecturer.

Meanwhile, in 1997, she was made the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development and Commissioner for Commerce in 1998, and in 1999 she served as the Special Assistant to the Yobe State Governor. From 2001 to 2007, she was the Director of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education Damaturu.

Stint At the Yobe State University

When Yobe State University was established in 2007, Professor Maimuna Waziri joined as a senior lecturer in the Department of Chemistry. She was also appointed the Director School of Basic and Remedial Studies as well as the Dean Faculty of Science as she was part of the team responsible for the establishment of the university.

On 1st October 2015, she got promoted to the rank of Professor while lecturing at the Federal University Gashua, making her the first Professor at the University.

Research and Other Works

Professor Maimuna has 32 research works to her credit, some of which include; “Analysis of some mineral elements in major coconut cultivars in Nigeria” and “Assessment of fluoride concentrations in surface waters and groundwater sources in Northeastern Nigeria”

The Professor is an active member of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD). The Organization provides research training, career development, and networking opportunities for women scientists throughout the developing world at different stages in their careers. She’s also a member of the Institute of Chartered Chemists Nigeria and American Biographical Institute of International Research.

The Professor sure has a lot of experience, achievements, and qualifications that make her deserving of her new position as the New Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University.
