Cabbage, Brassica oleracea capitata, is a bulbing member of the Crucuferes plant family. Cabbage heads are a compact layer of fleshy and crunchy sheets of leaflets. They come in different colors including red and white and are commonly grown in Northern Nigeria.

Benefits of Cabbage

Cabbage has been proven to contain calcium, dietary fiber, folate, Vitamin K, B and C, potassium, manganese, and other important nutrients. Like most vegetables, cabbage is low in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Uses of Cabbage

Cabbages are a major ingredient in salads and coleslaw. Apart from this, they are commonly used in making probiotic food like sauerkraut.

Growing Cabbage

Season

Preferably in dry season.

Soil Type

Deep, rich soil.

Nursery

Sow seeds in the nursery with 2 seeds per hole. Seeds are expected to germinate between 5-7 days. After germination when seedlings have 2-3 leaves, thin them out to one seed per stand.

Transplanting

Transplant around 3-4 weeks when seeds have 5 or 6 leaves. Trim gently the root and bury into the soil so that the first leaf is close to the ground. Be careful not to bury the core of the cabbage. Transplant into a growing bed with a spacing of 50cm/80cm.

Maintenance

Weed around plant beds frequently and fertilize with liquid organic fertilizers often. Water frequently, especially during the dry season. It is preferable to water the base of the plants to avoid damping the cabbage core. To aid the process of bulbing, add 1 teaspoon of ammonium sulfate per watering can.

The pest and diseases include Cabbage Moth, Aphids, Root-Knot Nematodes, Clubroot, Downy Mildew, Black rot, etc. This can be combatted by spraying organic or inorganic pesticides, fungicides, and handpicking of pests.

Harvest

Cabbage is ready to be harvested 3-4 months after sowing. Heads should be harvested carefully to avoid cut, bruise, and blemishes.

Preservation

Harvested heads should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from humidity to avoid rot.

Processing

With the new interest in ketogenic and keto diets, cabbage powder has become an important ingredient in making swallows. The powders are made similar to other vegetable powders production method using a dryer or dehydrator.
