Cucumber, Cucumis sativus, is a crippling, fruit-producing plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. It is native to South Asia but is commonly grown in Nigeria. The cylindrical fruit of the cucumber plant varies in size, thickness, color, and length. The fruit contains mostly water and is usually used as a healthy vegetable snack.

Benefits of Cucumber

Cucumbers are low in saturated fat, sodium, and cholesterol. They are high in Potassium, Magnesium, Vitamin A, and vitamin C. The cucumber plant is mostly water, so it helps in rehydrating the body and skin. Cucumbers also contain many antioxidants and micronutrients.

Cucumber Uses

The tender fruit is mostly eaten raw. It is also used in fruit salads, pickles, as a nutrient infusion in water, etc. Cucumbers are used in the beauty industry to aid skin rejuvenation and to clear eye bags.

Growing Cucumber


Any season but preferably in dry season.

Soil Type

Rich, loose and well-drained soil.


Seeds can be sown either directly on the field or starting with the nursery. Plant 2-3 seeds per seed hole of 2cm deep with a spacing of about 70X70cm. Seeds are expected to have germinated around 5 days. Thin out to 1 plant per hole after 2 weeks of germination. If planted in nursery, transplant 8-10days after germination.


Weed and water beds frequently. Fertilize with organic or inorganic fertilizers. Stake each plant so the fruits do not touch the soil. Prune the plants.

Pest and diseases of Cucumber include Thrip, Whitefly, Aphid, Caterpillar, Leafminer, Beetle, Anthracnose, Powdery mildew, Downy mildew, and virus. These can be combatted by spraying organic or inorganic pesticides and fungicides or handpicking of pests.


Harvest the fruits 2-3 months after planting. Attention should be made to avoid damaging the fruits during harvest.


Keep harvested cucumber in a cool and dry place.
